Investing in a car is a huge responsibility. Especially with the price of cars these days, you want to make sure that you take good care of your vehicle. In so doing, you can help insure that your car will give you many years of good service.
By following a few simple steps, car maintenance is not really that difficult.
Perhaps the most common type of car maintenance is changing the oil. This is not a particularly difficult job, in fact, many people do it themselves. As you drive the oil in your car breaks down and therefore, ceases to lubricate engine parts as it should. You can keep ahead of the game by checking your engine oil regularly. The easiest way, I have found, is to make a note in a small car maintenance book of when you have checked your oil. I usually do it with every other fill up unless I have recently driven a considerable distance. By noting it, you guarantee that you are checking the oil regularly. If you see that the oil is below the “add” line on the dip stick, then add a quart. This will also help you stay on top of oil changes. If you don’t, your car will eventually let you know how bad an idea that was.
Always maintain the recommended tire pressure in your tires. Under-inflated or over-inflated tires can dramatically change your mileage figures, not to mention, becoming a hazard while driving. A good rule of thumb on checking tires is to check the pressure at the beginning of each month. Again, this helps to insure regular maintenance of the tires. If, however, you think a tire looks low, then check it immediately. With all of the pot-holes, air can sometimes escape a tire as you travel. Nails and road debris can also get picked up when traveling thus putting a hole in the tire. You can have a slow air leak that you may not notice for sometimes. Also, have your tires rotated from time to time. This should usually be done about every 10,000 miles. This will help to maintain even wear among all of your tires.
Know the maintenance schedule. There are some items in your car that you should replace at regular intervals. The timing belt and car cover are good examples. Filters are another item which should be changed. The oil filter is usually changed with each oil change. The air filter should be replaced whenever you have an engine tune-up. Your fuel filter, although not thought of very often should be done once a year. And don’t forget about the transmission fluid. Many people don’t give this any thought. Transmission fluid should be replaced every two years.
Cleaning the engine is not foremost in anyone’s mind but it is a good idea to do it once in a while. You can do this yourself but it is much safer being done by a professional mechanic.
Staying on top of the maintenance of your car will give you years of top service from your vehicle. And after all, paying what you had to pay for this car, you want it to last as long as possible.
